Action
Proposed mode of action of psychostimulants in ADHD is enhancement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission.
This aims to reduce functional impairment across a range of settings (including home, school and peer relationships) and minimize long term adverse effects on academic performance, vocational success, social and emotional development.
Dose advice
ADHD in school age children: Initially 5-10mg daily given in 1-3 divided doses, increasing by daily dose by 5-10mg each week to a maximum of 40mg/day. When total daily dose is > 10mg/day give in 2-3 divided doses
ADHD in adults: Initially 10mg each morning, gradually increase daily dose as indicated clinically, by 5-10mg at weekly intervals to a maximum of 60mg/day.
Narcolepsy in adults: Initially 5mg twice daily (morning and noon), gradually increase to 20-30mg daily. Maximum of 60mg/day.
