Indication

Bendrofluazide is used for the treatment of oedema (swelling of the body) due to heart failure, liver disease, drugs, the menstrual cycle and other causes. It is also used to treat mild to moderate cases of high blood pressure.

Action

Bendrofluazide is a diuretic that reduces the reabsorption of fluid and salt in the kidneys resulting in increased loss of salt and water from the body. In people who are oedematous (have extra unnecessary fluid in their body) Bendrofluazide will remove the fluid. By causing water and salt loss Bendrofluazide also helps to decrease the blood pressure.

Dose advice

For treatment for oedema

5 to 10 mg is given daily, or on alternate days. This should be reduced to a maintenance dose of 5 to 10 mg one to three times a week as the oedema resolves.

For the treatment of premenstrual tension

5 mg is given daily for the 5 to 7 days preceding the onset of menses.


For the treatment of hypertension

the standard dosing is 5 mg once daily however dosing ranges from 2.5 – 10 mg daily. Antihypertensive effect is not increased be giving doses greater than 10 mg.
