Indication
Actifed is used to treat the symptoms of a cold or flu (blocked and runny nose) when a non productive cough (no phlegm or mucus) is present.
Action
Pseudoephedrine
Nasal decongestant: Congestion causes a blocked and runny nose because the lining of the nose in swollen. Pseudoephedrine constricts blood vessels in the nose which reduces swelling, congestion and a runny nose.
Dextromethorphan
Helps to stop coughing by inhibiting the cough centre in the brain.
Dose advice
Adults (>12 years)
- 2 capsules every 4-6 hours
Children (6-12 years)
- 1 capsule every 4-6 hours

Common side effects
Possible side effects due to pseudoephedrine tend to be mild and disappear quickly. These include: palpitations, increased heart rate, difficultly sleeping, lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, tremor, nervousness. Serious side effects are very rare. Side effects due to dextromethorphan are rare but may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness.
Uncommon side effects
Very rare side effects include hallucinations and difficultly urinating.
Allergic reactions are very rare and may occur as a skin rash.
