Indication

Used for symptom relief in non-productive cough Not to be used in asthma, COPD or respiratory failure

Action

Acts by suppressing the cough center in the brain

Dose advice

Oral liquid, 1mg/mL, 100 & 200mL

Adult:

  • 15-30mg 3-4 times daily

Child:

  • 2-5 years: 3mg, 3-4 times daily
  • 5 years: 7.5-15mg, 3-4 times daily
  • Not to be used in children < 2years

Pregnancy:


  • Safe to use.
  • ADEC category A

Lactation:

  • No data available but should be safe to use

Drowsiness Constipation Nausea Vomiting Drug Interactions:

Alcohol:

  • increased drowsiness; avoid combined use CNS depressants
  • increased respiratory depression; avoid concurrent use
