Indication

Accolate is a treatment of asthma

Action

Act by antagonizing airway smooth muscle contraction and inflammation

Dose advice

  • 20 mg twice daily at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
  • May be increased up to 40 mg twice daily
  • Pregnancy: Limited experience. ADEC category B1
  • Lactation: Limited experience, should be safe to use

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Drug interactions:
    • Warfarin: increased INR (monitor INR)
    • Theophylline: possible increase in theophylline concentration (monitor theophylline concentration)
    • Erythromycin: Decreases Zafirlukast concentration (may require larger dose of Zafirlukast)

Uncommon side effects

  • Hepatitis (avoid use in hepatic impairment)
  • Churg-Strauss syndrome
  • Allergic reactions including urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis
