Indication
Accolate is a treatment of asthma
Action
Act by antagonizing airway smooth muscle contraction and inflammation
Dose advice
- 20 mg twice daily at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
- May be increased up to 40 mg twice daily
- Pregnancy: Limited experience. ADEC category B1
- Lactation: Limited experience, should be safe to use

Common side effects
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea
- Drug interactions:
- Warfarin: increased INR (monitor INR)
- Theophylline: possible increase in theophylline concentration (monitor theophylline concentration)
- Erythromycin: Decreases Zafirlukast concentration (may require larger dose of Zafirlukast)
Uncommon side effects
- Hepatitis (avoid use in hepatic impairment)
- Churg-Strauss syndrome
- Allergic reactions including urticaria, angioedema and anaphylaxis
