Generic Name: Tetracycline hydrochloride
Product Name: Tetrex

Indication

– Tetracycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as sinusitis, chest infections. Severe acne, sexually transmitted infections, and infections carried by animals (Q fever, leptospirosis).

Action

Tetrex acts on the protein manufacturing units in the bacteria, preventing sensitive bacteria from growing.

Dose advice

-Take all of the medication that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection has been completely treated
-Should be taken on an empty stomach (i.e. at least one hour before food or four hours after food).
-Adults: 1 g daily in four divided doses of 250 mg each. Severe infections require higher doses.
-Children < 40kg: usual dose is 25 mg/kg/day in four divided doses.
-Uncomplicated gonorrhoea: When penicillin is contraindicated, 1.5 g initially followed by 0.5 g four times daily for a total of 9 g.
-Impaired renal function: doses require adjustment.

Common side effects

As with any other medication, tetrex can cause a number of side effects, most of which are likely to be minor and short-lived. If any uncommon or serious side effects are experienced, the patient should stop taking the medication and inform their doctor immediately.

Minor side effects include:
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Stomach pain
-Tooth discolouration
-Photosensitivity


Uncommon side effects

Less common side effects include:
-Rash
-Inflammation of the tongue
-Bone deformity
-Pigmentation of the skin
