    Proposed mode of action of psychostimulants in ADHD is enhancement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission. This aims to reduce functional impairment across a range of settings (including home, school and peer relationships) and minimize long term adverse effects on academic performance, vocational success, social and emotional development.

    Dose advice

    ADHD in school age children:Initially 2.5-10mg daily (based on 0.15-0.5mg/kg) increasing by 2.5-5mg daily each week as clinically indicated to a maximum of 30mg/day. When total daily dose is > 5mg give as 2 divided doses.ADHD in adults:Initially 5mg each morning, gradually increase as indicated clinically, to a maximum of 60mg/day.Narcolepsy in adults:Initially 10mg each morning, gradually increase as indicated clinically, to a maximum of 60mg/day in divided doses.



    Common side effects

    Most adverse effects are dose dependent.

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Appetite loss
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth

    Uncommon side effects

  • Movement disorders
  • Tics
  • Rash
  • Weight loss
  • Growth retardation
