Proposed mode of action of psychostimulants in ADHD is enhancement of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission. This aims to reduce functional impairment across a range of settings (including home, school and peer relationships) and minimize long term adverse effects on academic performance, vocational success, social and emotional development.
ADHD in school age children: Initially 2.5-10mg daily (based on 0.15-0.5mg/kg) increasing by 2.5-5mg daily each week as clinically indicated to a maximum of 30mg/day. When total daily dose is > 5mg give as 2 divided doses.
ADHD in adults: Initially 5mg each morning, gradually increase as indicated clinically, to a maximum of 60mg/day.
Narcolepsy in adults: Initially 10mg each morning, gradually increase as indicated clinically, to a maximum of 60mg/day in divided doses.
Common side effects
Most adverse effects are dose dependent.
