Indication

Actifed is used to treat the symptoms of a cold or flu (blocked and runny nose) when a productive cough (coughing up phlegm) is present.

Action

Pseudoephedrine

Nasal decongestion: Congestion causes a blocked and runny nose because the lining of the nose in swollen. Decongestant acts by constricting blood vessels in the nose thereby reducing swelling and congestion.

Guaifenesin

Helps to clear the lungs and respiratory tract of mucus and phelgm by making it thinner and more viscous (liquid-like).

Dose advice

Adults (>12):


  • 2 capsules every 4-6 hours

Children (6-12):

  • 1 capsule every 4-6 hours

Common side effects

Possible side effects tend to be mild and disappear quickly. These include: palpitations, increased heart rate, difficultly sleeping, lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, tremor, nervousness. Serious side effects are very rare.

Uncommon side effects

Very rare side effects include hallucinations and difficultly urinating. Allergic reactions are very rare and may occur as a skin rash
